There’s so much to see and do during the lovely spring season! I thought it would be helpful to make a quick list of the best things to do in New York City in the spring for first time visitors, based off my experience as a local.

Catch the St. Patrick’s Day Parade

The St. Patrick’s Day Parade, dating back to 1762, is a cherished tradition older than America itself. Organized by New York City’s robust Irish community, the event celebrates the Patron Saint of Ireland and has evolved into a broader celebration of Irish culture as a whole. With 150,000+ marchers, and more than 2 million spectators, it stands as one of the most popular events in New York City in spring.

The procession along Fifth Avenue is unique, it bans all cars and floats (allowing only marchers). The parade begins at 11 AM at Fifth Avenue and 44th Street, and ends around 5pm at Fifth Avenue and 79th Street. The optimal viewpoint is near St. Patrick’s Cathedral, one of the most beautiful churches in NYC, but anticipate sizable crowds, as this parade is a highlight of spring in NYC.

Enjoy the Easter Parade & Bonnet Festival

For more than 150 years New Yorkers have come together to show off their extravagant bonnets on Easter Sunday. The locals gather around St. Patrick’s Cathedral before parading down Fifth Avenue in one of the most unique traditions in New York City in spring. The event has turned into an excuse for New Yorkers to get creative with their head-wear, whether they’re observing Easter or not.

The locals gather in the morning, and at 10AM the parade takes off from 49th to 57th Streets. There aren’t any forms to fill out, it’s just good, old fashioned community organizing. Participating is as simple as showing up in a fun hat to enjoy one of the best things to do in New York City in the spring.

Fun fact: It was Christian tradition to wear something new on Easter, and in the 1870’s hats were the statement piece to have. The film Easter Parade (1948) really helped bolster the event’s popularity.

Cheer On the New York Tartan Day Parade

The Tartan Parade, a vibrant celebration of Scottish heritage, has been weaving its way through the streets of the Big Apple since 1998. The Atlantic 10 Conference hosts the first and second rounds of the tournament at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center on March 22nd and 24th. In simple terms it’s a rooftop bar overlooking Central Park. You have access to it with standard admission. Moreover, every spring the New York City museum decorates the rooftop with new exhibits. You’ll also be able to purchase snacks or drinks (my suggestion is to try to visit for sunset).

Gawk at Navy Ships During Fleet Week

Fleet Week in New York City is an annual event where the U.S. Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard dock ships in the city’s harbors. It typically includes public ship tours, military demonstrations, and various events to honor and engage with the military.

During Fleet Week, servicemen and women participate in community outreach, fostering a connection between the military and the public. Iconic vessels, including aircraft carriers, can often be visited by the public, providing a unique opportunity for New Yorkers and visitors to interact with the U.S. military firsthand in New York City every spring.

Spring is one of best times to visit New York City thanks in large part to the weather. As a result of the mild temperatures, the days become more comfortable for exploring. Plus, the parks are blooming with color.

Tips for Visiting New York City in Spring

Wear comfortable walking shoes: You will be doing a lot of walking while exploring New York City in the spring. The subway is efficient, but sometimes it’s better to walk to absorb more of the city. Bring your most comfortable pair of shoes because you’ll be getting those steps in, I guarantee it.

Start your day early: Crowds will slowly be coming back to New York City in the spring after winter. Start your day as early as possible and visit your “must see” places first thing.

Make reservations ahead of time: New York City is home to 8 million locals. Add in the many more annual visitors, and odds on that popular place you want to visit will have a line. If you’re visiting New York City in spring book reservations ahead of time, whenever possible.
