2 Ingredient Biscuits In 20 Minutes | No Yeast, No Butter, No Oil (2)

It’s no secret that I love recipes with very few ingredients. My current favorites that need just 2 ingredients are peanut butter cookies, keto crackers, and these two ingredient biscuits.

Why this recipe works

  • Just 2 ingredients. All you need is self-rising flour and Greek yogurt and that is it (it’s also known as magic dough).
  • No butter or buttermilk. Traditional biscuits call for both, but not this one!
  • No yeast needed. Unlike other breads, these rise perfectly on their own.
  • Easy to customize. Keep them simple with some butter, or fold through sweet or savory mix-ins.

Can we lament about how good these are? The texture is soft and fluffy on the inside, and golden brown on the outside. I added cheese to them, making them deliciously cheesy, but you can leave them plain or jazz them up!

Ingredients needed

This recipe calls for pantry and fridge staple ingredients that you probably already have on hand. Here is what you’ll need:

  • Self rising flour. If you don’t have self rising flour on hand, easily make your own!
  • Greek yogurt.Non-fat or low-fat Greek yogurt.
  • Shredded cheese. Optional, but I love a good savory biscuit (my favorite recipe is cheese drop biscuits). Standard cheese or dairy free cheese both work.

How to make 2 ingredient biscuits

Start by adding the self-rising flour and yogurt into a mixing bowl and mix until combined and smooth. If adding cheese, gently mix it through at the end.

Next, gently flour a kitchen surface and transfer your dough onto it. Divide the dough into 8 equal portions and place them onto a lined baking sheet. Place the biscuits in a preheated oven and bake for 15-17 minutes, or until the cheese is golden and the edges are brown.

Remove the biscuits from the oven and serve immediately, or let them cool to room temperature.

Tips to make the best recipe

  • If you use a non-dairy yogurt, be sure it is thick and not watery. The thinner the yogurt is, the more flour you will need to add.
  • If your dough is too thin (wet), add more flour. If the dough is too thick, add a few extra tablespoons of yogurt.
  • For a delicious snack, serve warm biscuits with jam, almond butter, or healthy Nutella!

Dietary swaps and variations

The beauty of this recipe is just how easy they are to customize to suit various diets or tastes. Here is what we’ve tried:

  • Make them vegan– Switch out the Greek yogurt for plant based yogurt, such as unsweetened coconut yogurt or soy yogurt. Try to use a brand that is naturally thicker, to form a smooth dough.
  • Make them gluten free. Use gluten free self rising flour, like the Doves Farm brand. I haven’t tried this with a homemade flour blend, so cannot vouch for those results.
  • Sweet biscuits– Use vanilla Greek yogurt and add 1-2 tablespoons of maple syrup or sugar free maple syrup.
  • Dairy free biscuits– Use a thick non-dairy yogurt, with no added sugar.

Storing and freezing instructions

  • To store: Biscuits can keep at room temperature, covered, for up to 3 days. If you’d like them to keep longer, store them in the refrigerator for up to 1 week.
  • To freeze: Place leftover biscuits on a ziplock bag and store them in the freezer for up to 6 months.
  • Reheating: To enjoy biscuits warm, microwave for 30 seconds or reheat in a preheated oven at 180C/350F for 6-7 minutes.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes biscuits rise and fluffy?

A leavening agent combined with some form of dairy is key for fluffy and high biscuits. This recipe has baking powder in the flour and combined this with yogurt.

Do I need to add butter or shortening?

While traditional biscuits call for at least one of these two ingredients, this recipe needs neither of them.

Are these healthy?

This recipe is on the healthier side, with very little fat and added protein from the Greek yogurt.
