HATE CRIME AND HATE SPEECH: CORRUPTION INVESTIGATORS TAKE NOTESouth Africa: Since 14 May 2024, we have a new act to prevent hate speech and hate crimes, Act 16 of 2023!Hate crimes are now defined as any crime motivated by prejudice or intolerance towards the victim and persons close to the victim, based on defined characteristics of the victim (occupation or trade, ethnicity, age etc). Hate speech is making known to 1 or more persons anything with the intention to be harmful, incite harm, promote or to propagate hatred based on defined grounds.Therefore: By investigating fraud, corruption and extortion (especially the vulnerable): It will be good to consider this act as additional ammunition. The prejudice and harm may just be construed as hate-crime related. Obviously case dependent.#Fraud #corruption #investigations

Corruption Perceptions Index 2022 https://issuu.comTransparency International released their Corruption Perception Index for 2022. This insightful annual publication compares and ranks 180 countries on the perception of corruption that exists in each. The higher the score, the higher the ranking. Spoiler alert: South Africa is 1 of 31 countries whose ranking has decreased since the previous edition. During 2021, we had a ranking of 44, for 2022 it was 43. This means we slipped to no 77 of 180, behind African countries like Senegal, Ghana, Mauritius, Namibia, Botswana, Cape Verde and Seychelles. Remember: Poverty does not cause corruption. Corruption causes poverty.
