This is one of my favorites, not to slow not to fast.

Gian Marco, they don’t actually call it the Rose and the Heater, do they? Tell me that’s a typo… Rose + Heater = dead rose… 🙂

Zina, I haven’t the original album of Packie Duignan, I have the mp3 files. I have found the title with “AND” in CDDB (www.gracenote.com).

Heather!

Zina, I just realized that the problem in not “in” or “and”, but “Heater”!
Of course is a typo. The rose is in (or and) the HeatHer.

Rose in the Heather

Well done Ryan - my favourite setting of this jig. It’s amazing how this great tune can be spoilt by playing both the first and fifth bar as “F3 EFE” which many session musicians tend to do.

🙂

Rose in the Heather

The reason the 1st & 5th bar this tune is often played “F3 EFE” is that 2 octave instruments (ie whistle & pipes) have trouble with the low B.

I humbly suggest that if you hear a tune being massacred, its most likely due to the players vs. the setting.

SB

This tune seems to bear remarkable similarities to the ‘Rights of Man’?

?

The two tunes don’t share the same key or timing.

Sorry- please ignore my comment. Confusing two adjacent midis on my player! (this is getting serious)

My version is slightly different from the ones copied from Norbeck’s tune collection:

Help with a tune

Hi all. I have been trying to get ‘Rose in the Heather’ for awhile now and I’m still having a bit of trouble with it. I’m still in a stage where I need both sheet music and to listen to a tune before I can start getting it down. I have a feeling I have a different sheet music version than the sound sample I’m using. Can anyone point me to the sheet music for the version seen in the following video:

thanks in advance!

That’s very similar to the version I transcribed above. Not exactly the same though.

Re: rose in the heather

Have you tried the flute/whistle-friendly settings in the “Comments” tab for this tune?

Sadly, this lovely little tutor, and “Ag Deanamh Ceoil: A Selection of 52 Tunes” (stage 2), is no longer available, or so I understand it.

“Tutor for the Feadóg Stáin”

I didn’t realise that the Rose in the Heather was in this Tutor. As far as its availability is concerned though, the last time I was in Monkstown there was a pile of these tutors stacked up in a corner of the shop. Anyone interested should give Comhaltas a ring on 01 280 0295 as I understand they’re now doing sales over the phone for Visa or Laser payments.

The version shown here by ‘c’ is the one I first learnt - there was a lovely rendition of it on the Stockton’s Wing CD, “The Crooked Rose”. However, I found the one with the low B in the Tommy Peoples tunebook and I think it’s nice to mix the two different tune settings for variation purposes.

The Rose in The Heather

There is a tune that I heard a great Edgeworthstown (Co Longford) Banjo player playing before this on a tape, the notes of the first part are GFGAGFGDBEDCBCEFAAGEDBCDGBBABDCBCDFEDCAFGBAG. I was just worndering if any one might know what it is called. Thanks.

Accompanying Chords?

I’ve almost got this classic tune down on fiddle now, but I’m also trying to figure out the accompanying guitar chords for it. Does anyone have or know where one might find those?

I agree with Bannerman about the “F3 EFE” bit, but for me this tune has worn itself thin now anyway from too many hearings.

Not much new here that hasn’t appeared in at least one of the other settings, except for turnarounds to lead into the repeat or the next part.

Re: The Rose In The Heather

On their 78 (which I assume popularized this tune) Morrison and Conlon played the final bar of each part edB AFE | FDD D2 A few players from the Sligo/Leitrim/Roscommon area faithfully keep that high e in there, Packie Duginan and Seamus Horan for instance.

Rose In The Heather

I heard a Dave Whelan play this version.
