The Gibson County Sheriff's Office reported one injury from Tuesday evening's storms: A person was injured when their trailer was overturned around 5:24 p.m. in the 7200 block of County Road South 1050 West.

7:41 p.m.: 'Thank god': No injuries reported after tornado, fire chief says

As of Tuesday evening, it looked like no one in Mount Vernon was injured after a tornado rampaged across town, Black Township Fire Chief Jay Price said.

Speaking to reporters outside the Dollar Tree in a strip mall along Indiana 62, Price said his crews responded to numerous gas leaks and multiple reports of heavy damage. But each place they went, everyone was accounted for.

"Thank god," he said. "... No injuries were reported, as far as I know, anywhere in the county from this tornado or weather system."

Cleanup, though, will take awhile. A warehouse for Kenco Logistics sustained serious damage. Multiple structures at the Port of Indiana took some of the brunt, as well, including a grain bin that lost its roof. The Courier & Press' MaCabe Brown also reported that 14 families were displaced at a mobile home park.

Price was working a medical run on the west end of town when damage reports started rolling in.

"We had a little bit delayed response with it because our 911 center actually went down," he said. "So they were coming back up and notifying us that, hey, there were some issues on the east side of Mount Vernon. I think I was the first arriving unit."

Price said he and his crews fielded damage at a grocery store, gas leaks, and a strong hit at Consolidated Grain and Barge. The Courier & Press also spotted overturned train cars and multiple mangled utility poles.

6:20 p.m.: Safety tips for post-tornado activity

The National Weather Service has tips for best practices following a tornado:

  • Continue to listen to local news or a NOAA Weather Radio.

  • Let your family and close friends know you are safe.

  • After the threat has ended, check for damage. Wear long pants, a long-sleeved shirt and "sturdy" shoes. Contact local authorities about downed power lines. Stay out of damaged buildings.

  • If you come across injured people and you are properly trained, provide first aid to victims until emergency response teams arrive.
